CHICAGO - Some big news yesterday from the Big Ten Conference. The league says it has entered into an agreement with the Pac 12 that would create a non-conference football series beginning in 2017.

Schools from each conference would play a game against a team from the other league, much like the Big Ten does in basketball with the ACC. The games would be spread over the first three weeks of the college football season.

There is potential that one of the non-conference football games would be played in the Rose Bowl each year. Other neutral site locations within the footprint of both leagues could also host some of the football games. All games in the series would be televised nationally, including many by each of the league's own cable TV networks.

The deal also includes the possibility of a series starting in men's and women's basketball between the two conferences.
