Sunday State Sports Briefs: UWGB women winners again
Wisconsin Sports-- Julie Wojta scored 15 points to lead the undefeated Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix to an easy 76-49 win over Loyola-Chicago Saturday.
GREEN BAY - Julie Wojta scored 15 points to lead the undefeated Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix to an easy 76-49 win over Loyola-Chicago Saturday.
The Phoenix are ranked eighth in the country and improved their record to 12-0, including 2-0 in the Horizon League standings. Wojta added eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, while playing just 25 minutes in the easy victory. The Ramblers were forced into 34 turnovers by the Green Bay defense.

Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures as Marquette University's women's basketball team won a road game at Toledo Saturday, 69-60. Arlesia Morse scored 14 points to lead the Eagles to their ninth win in 14 games. Marquette pulled away with some hot, 61-percent shooting in the second half. They had trail at intermission 25-24. The Rockets led 40-33 with 13 minutes left, but Marquette outscored them 36-20 the rest of the way.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee couldn’t hold a 10-point, second-half lead in its 54-50 loss to Butler. Milwaukee’s record drops to 10-5, including 3-1 in the Horizon League. Kaylon Williams scored 12 points to lead three in double figures for the Panthers. Ryan Allen added 11 and James Haarsman 10. It was the third straight win for Butler.

UW-Green Bay never led after they were four minutes into their road game at Valparaiso, but the Phoenix made it close. Alec Brown scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but Green Bay dropped a close 90-87 game to the Crusaders. The Phoenix record falls to 6-8, including 2-2 in the Horizon League. Aaron Armstead hit five three-pointers and scored 19 points, but the Phoenix still fell short in Indiana.

Ten Badgers scored at least one point as the Wisconsin men’s hockey team took a 4-3 victory over the U.S. under-18 squad. It was an exhibition at the Kohl Center. Wisconsin got goals from Michael Mersch, Derek Lee and Keegan Meuer to take a 3-1 lead and never trailed after that.

The game may mean more to Detroit because the Lions can improve their playoff picture. They’re in, but a win could give Detroit the number-five seed from the NFC. A victory in today’s game would also be the first for the Lions at Lambeau Field in 21 years. That’s Green Bay’s incentive. Packers coach Mike McCartney hasn’t said who will start and how long they will play in the final regular season game. He doesn’t want anyone to get hurt and a victory doesn’t improve the post-season at all. Then, there’s pride. Though the Packers have dominated in recent years, this is still a strong rivalry game. The Lions come in looking for their fourth win in a row and their 11th win of the season. They are four point under-dogs, according to the odds makers.

Starting today, Green Bay Packer fans can vote on the newest member to the team’s Fan Hall of Fame. Voting runs until February 5th, with the winner announced February 14th. Everyone casting a vote will be entered into a drawing for a 2012 road trip to an away game for the Packers. The winner will get a set of prizes and have his or her name permanently displayed in the Packers Hall of Fame. Voters will select from a list of 10 finalists.
