River Falls and Ellsworth law enforcement officials are reporting several cases involving dangerous health effects related to the use of synthetic marijuana.

Use appears to be highest among teenagers and young adults. Several individuals have required hospital treatment as a result of using this substance.

Statewide, this drug is being packaged and marketed as incense or potpourri, and sold at convenience stores, gas stations and head shops under several product names, including Spice, K2, Genie, Yucatan Fire, Sence, Smoke, Skunk and Zohai.

Parents should be on the lookout for what looks like incense in their child’s room or belongings and watch to see if their children seem more anxious than usual. Common reactions to the drug include a fast, racing heartbeat, elevated blood pressure and nausea. The symptoms can be life-threatening. Medical attention should be sought immediately if these symptoms are observed.

In Wisconsin, it is a Class A misdemeanor crime to possess with the intent to abuse, intentionally abuse or distribute a hazardous substance. Synthetic marijuana use may be prosecuted under this statute.

The Pierce County Public Health Department urges the community to be aware of the health hazards associated with this drug. Parents and school officials should be alert to the availability and serious health threat the drug poses to youth in the community.

Questions about synthetic marijuana can be addressed to the local poison center 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-222-1222.
