Spring Valley-Elmwood's prep wrestling team begins defense of its Dunn-St. Croix title tonight as they host Glenwood City.
Both teams are ranked in the top 10 in Division 3 with SV-Elmwood No. 2 and Glenwood City No. 7. The Hilltoppers come into the dual meet with a 16-6 overall record. GC lost a close D-SC dual against St. Croix Central 39-33 but went 4-1 at the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm Duals with a 4-1 record.
The 'Toppers feature several of the state's best wrestlers in Austin Moe, Adam Holmquist and Riley Knops.
This is the Redbirds' first action since the Northern Badger Tournament where they finished second overall. However, SVE will keep busy this month as they will wrestle in several meets throughout the month, starting with the Chippewa Falls Invitational this Saturday.
In the Middle Border Conference tonight, Prescott will wrestle at Durand and No. 3 Ellsworth hosts Osceola. Ellsworth is coming off a first place showing at the Federated Duals in Owataonna, Minn., including a win over the No. 7 ranked host team. Head Coach Chad Steldt says the Panthers are progressing as a team right on schedule.
"Our younger wrestlers have learned quickly," Steldt said. "Dennis Schultz is a good example. He had a great weekend of wrestling at Owatonna. Our upper weights have improved a lot since the start of the season and quite frankly, carried us to wins in Owatonna and to a good showing at the Bi-State."
The return of veteran wrestler Logan Kemmerer to the line-up in the next week or two will be a boost but Steldt with the number of wrestlers EHS has in the 145-152 range nothing will be guaranteed.
"He'll have to earn his way back in because we have several wrestlers and they're going to provide the compeitition for those spots on the varsity team. But that's the way we wants, having the best wrestler be there for us in the meets."
