Marquette hands Pitt its sixth straight loss

MILWAUKEE - A strong defensive effort propelled Marquette to a 62-57 Big East Conference win over Pittsburgh Saturday at the Bradley Center.
It was Pitt’s sixth straight loss. Marquette won for the second time in a row, after dropping a pair to highly-ranked Georgetown and Syracuse. The Golden Eagles are 3-2 in the conference and 14-4 over all.
In the middle of the second half, the Eagles scored 13 points in a row to take a 49-41 lead with just over five minutes left. A three-quarter court press caused turnovers by Pitt, including two straight steals and lay ups by Todd Mayo. Darius Johnson-Odom led Marquette with 18 points, while Jae Crowder added 15.
The Panthers had closed to within three in the last minute, Davante Gardner’s free throws with 18 seconds remaining iced the victory.
