Saturday Sports Briefs: Badger hockey teams victorious
Wisconsin Sports-- The UW mens and women's hockey teams were winners in their respective Friday games.
MADISON - Mark Zengerle scored a goal and added two assists at the Wisconsin men’s hockey team shut out Alaska-Anchorage 4-0 Friday night at the Kohl Center.
Zengerle had his 20-game scoring streak ended last weekend. He started things off right with a goal at 9:04 of the first period. He also assisted on scores by Frankie Simonelli and Jake McCabe. Justin Schultz also had a goal and two assists as the Badgers went over the .500 mark at 11-10-2. Wisconsin is 6-9-2 in the WCHA. Goalie Joel Rempel made 23 saves in claiming his second shutout of the season. The Seawolves haven’t won in Madison in seven years.

A couple of goals in the second period was all goalie Alex Rigsby needed. She notched her eighth shutout of the season as the Wisconsin women’s hockey team blanked Minnesota-Duluth 2-0 in front of 2,000 fans at the Kohl Center. Rigsby stopped all 36 shots on goal as her Badger team improved its record to 21-2-2. Alev Keller put Wisconsin on the board first with her first goal of the season. That came almost three into the second period. Then, Madison scored two minutes later. Katy Josephs assisted on both goals.

Two three-point shots were off the mark in the closing seconds as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee dropped a heart-breaker to Youngstown State, 68-66. Ashen Ward hit the winning shot for the Penguins with 31 seconds remaining on an offensive rebound. The Panthers had plenty of time to set up a game-winning shot, but both attempts missed the net. Kaylon Williams led Milwaukee with 18 points. The Panthers’ record is 13-7, including 6-2 in Horizon League play.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix forced 21 turnovers, but still dropped a 78-68 decision to Cleveland State last night. The Vikings led almost all the way, going up by 18 points once in the second half. With the win Cleveland State joins UW-Milwaukee and Valparaiso at the top of the Horizon League standings. Kam Cerroni had five three-pointers for the Phoenix. He and Keifer Sykes scored 15 points each in the loss. Green Bay’s record falls to 7-11, including 3-5 in conference games.

Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin has been named head coach for the Miami Dolphins. Philbin earned the head coaching job just two weeks after his son died and one week after the Packers were knocked out of the NFL playoffs. Philbin first interviewed for the Dolphin job January 7th. His son Michael’s body was found the next day. Philbin has coached with the Packers since 2003 and has been offensive coordinator since 2007. He got the job after Miami’s first choice, Jeff Fisher, turned the team down to become head coach of the St. Louis Rams. The Dolphins are coming off three straight losing seasons – some that hadn’t happened for nearly 50 years. The team hasn’t reached the Super Bowl in 27 years.

With reserve quarterback Matt Flynn about to leave as a free agent, the Green Bay Packers have signed quarterback Nick Hill. Hill signed with the Chicago Bears in 2008 as an undrafted free agent for the Southern Illinois Salukis. He played in the Arena Football League the last three seasons.

The Milwaukee Brewers will find out in 25 days or less whether they will have to play the first third of next season without National League MVP Ryan Braun. An arbitration hearing on Braun’s possible 50-game suspension started last Thursday and wrapped up yesterday. No player has ever won an appeal of a positive test for performance enhancing drugs. Results of the appeal won’t be announced by Major League Baseball. Positive tests are supposed to be confidential, but ESPN broke the story. If the appeal fails, Braun won be able to play until May 31st, forfeiting $1.87 million in salary.

The Marquette Golden Eagles take a three-game winning streak into Providence for a Big East game tonight. Marquette is ranked 21st with a 15-4 record, including 4-2 in conference play. But, the Golden Eagles are also still looking for their first road win of the year in conference play. Providence has a 1-5 record in Big East games, but that one victory was a stunning 90-59 rout of Louisville – which was ranked number-14 at the time. The Friars have two losses to number-one Syracuse, then No. 12 Georgetown and St. John’s and Seton Hall.

University of Wisconsin head football coach Bret Bielema has hired Arkansas offensive line coach Mark Markuson to fill the same job in Madison. Markuson is expected to be named the Badgers’ new offensive line coach to make it official. Markuson has more than a decade of experience coaching in the powerful SEC.
