Conference title at stake between SCC and Spring Valley/Elmwood

While Spring Valley-Elmwood’s prep wrestling team wasn’t looking ahead to Thursday’s Dunn-St. Croix Conference dual meet against St. Croix Central, which will decide the league title for 2012, they certainly were in preparation mode last week.

Although SVE beat Mondovi soundly 69-12 last week the Buffaloes had two wins in the meet at 220 and 285 pounds. This also happens to be where St. Croix Central will be at its strongest against the Redbirds with wrestlers like Lauden Wood and Marcus Malacek. Getting bonus points in the lower and middleweights will be crucial for SV/Elmwood’s chances of winning on the road.

“We know we’re had to push for more points and strive for bonus points in the matches we’ll have an advantage in to offset their advantages,” SVE head coach Carter Turner said. “We know the dual meet is going to come down to bonus points.”

One of the wrestlers Spring Valley/Elmwood will be counting on is Zac Newton. He won his second straight tournament title by taking first at 132 pounds in Shell Lake. He won his first place match 4-2 over New Richmond’s Casey Schuh.

“He’s better wrestling at 132 than 138,” Turner said. “He’s a good wrestler and we’ve found he can wrestle better at a lighter weight so we moved him down and really doing a good job since.”

Other titlists for SVE at Shell Lake were Derek Huebel, a 9-5 winner over Derek Dowd at 113; Brady Webb, a 13-2 major decision winner over NR’s Shane Blackman at 120, Jaron Turner, a 12-4 major decision winner over New Richmond’ s Aaron Daul; Andy Bune, a 5-2 winner over Hudson Derek Schindler at 182 and Tyler Hunter, a winner over Cumberland’s Jaylen Lansin by pin in 2:10 at 195.

If all these wrestlers come through with big s wins tonight, the Spring Valley/Elmwood will win its second league title in a row.

Also tonight in prep wrestling action, Ellsworth and Prescott complete the Middle Border Conference portion of their schedule with Ellsworth hosting Durand and Prescott hosting Amery. Tomorrow SVE will wrestle in a quad meet at Menomonie and on Saturday Ellsworth competes in the Forest Lake, Minn. Dual Tournament. The Panthers' first dual will be at 10:30 a.m. against Forest Lake, the No. 3 ranked team in Minnesota Class AAA. They will also wrestle against LeSeuer/Henderson in their pool and then wrestle a placing match later in the day. Also in the tournament is No. 1 Apple Valley, Minn. Stillwater and Sauk Rapids-Rice, Minn.
