Sunday State Sports Briefs: UW women set NCAA record and get win
Wisconsin Sports-- The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team was a winner on the ice and at the turnstile Saturday. Playing before an NCAA-record crowd of 12,402 fans at the Kohl Center, the Badgers blanked Bemidji State 1-0.
MADISON - The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team was a winner on the ice and at the turnstile Saturday. Playing before an NCAA-record crowd of 12,402 fans at the Kohl Center, the Badgers blanked Bemidji State 1-0.
A third period goal by Hilary Knight sent everybody home happy on “Fill the Bowl” night. Goalie Alex Rigsby recorded her sixth shutout of the season as the Badger record advanced to 24-2-2. The weekend sweep gives UW a 18-2-2-1 WCHA mark. Wisconsin hosts Minnesota State next Friday and Sunday afternoons.

A 4-2 win over the Wisconsin Badgers gave North Dakota a weekend sweep of the WCHA action in Grand Forks. North Dakota outshot the Badgers men 41-22 while dominating the action. Keegan Meuer tied the score at 1-1 for Wisconsin in the first period, then John Ramage tied it against at 10:33 of the second. That was all the scoring for Wisconsin which fell back to the .500 mark at 12-12-2, including 7-11-2 in conference play. Wisconsin goalie Joel Rumpel was barraged by the Fighting Sioux, stopping 37 shots.

University of Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson completed 4-of-7 passes at the Senior Bowl Saturday. His efforts were good for one touchdown and one interception as the North won 23-13. He was joined on the team by fullback Bradie Ewing, guard Kevin Zeitler, punter Brad Nortman and safety Kyle Wojta. Wide receiver Nick Toon was supposed to play, but had to step aside due to a minor injury.

Brennan Cougill and Alec Brown combined for 40 points and 16 rebounds in Wisconsin-Green Bay’s 80-68 victory over Butler Saturday night. The Phoenix led by a point at half, then pulled away after intermission. Keifer Sykes chipped in with 14 points and seven assists. Green Bay’s record is now 9-12, including 5-6 in the Horizon League.

The UW-Milwaukee Panthers missed three shots from three-point range in the final 13 seconds, falling to Valparaiso 55-52. The Crusaders have now won five of their last six games. Milwaukee had led most of the way, but Valpo rallied late. Tony Meier led Milwaukee with 13 points. James Haarsma added 10. Milwaukee’s record falls to 14-9, including 7-4 in league play.
