Andre Hollins tallied 12 points and Joe Coleman netted 11 for Minnesota (16-6, 4-5 Big Ten). The Gophers are now winners of four of their last five.
For Illinois (15-6, 4-4), Brandon Paul scored a game-high 28 points. Leonard Meyers added a double-double of 17 points and 13 boards for the Illini, who have lost three straight.
Minnesota played to a 30-26 lead after one half behind 48 percent shooting from the field. Illinois made good on just 37 percent of its shots in the frame.
Illinois came back to tie the game at 46-46 with 8:11 remaining. The Illini took the lead moments later and led by as many as six in the final five minutes. Down three with four seconds to play, Austin Hollins drove to the hoop for an old-fashion three-point play to tie the game at 64-64 and force overtime. In the extra frame, Minnesota netted the first points and Illinois would never tie or regain the lead.
Minnesota got a huge boost from its bench, which outscore Illinois' reserves 39-9.
