Minnesota Sports Briefs: Gophers swept in season series by Iowa
Minnesota Sports-- The University of Minnesota men's basketball team started slow and finished flat in a 63-59 loss at Iowa last night.
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Minnesota men's basketball team started slow and finished flat in a 63-59 loss at Iowa last night.
The Hawkeyes rallied back from a ten-point deficit in the second half and outscored the Gophers 9-0 over the final three minutes. Matt Gatens scored a game-high 18 points for Iowa and Roy Marble added 12. Ralph Sampson III led Minnesota with 13 points and Julian Welch had 12 points, six assists and five rebounds. The Gophers trailed 15-3 early but were able to make some shots and take a 27-24 lead at halftime. Minnesota turned the ball over 16 times and was outrebounded 39-35
The 4-6 Hawkeyes swept the season series with the 4-6 Gophers for the first time since 2007.

Minnesota's women's basketball team is in Champaign for a Big Ten matchup with Illinois tonight (7:30pm). Minnesota is coming off a 75-65 upset of ninth-ranked Ohio State at the Barn Sunday. The Fighting Illini won at Michigan State 71-62 in overtime last week for their first victory in conference play. The 4-5 Gophers lone Big Ten road win was at Northwestern on January 5th.

U of M left wing Emily West has been named WCHA Women's Offensive Player of the Week. West scored a hat trick and a goal in a weekend sweep at Minnesota State-Mankato. The senior from Colorado Springs has 16 goals and ten assists through 26 games this season. The number-two Gophers play at St.Cloud State this weekend.
