SUN PRAIRIE - Wisconsin's most famous groundhog says we'll have an early spring. Jimmy the Groundhog was taken to downtown Sun Prairie as part of the community's Groundhog Day celebration. And when he emerged from his hole at 7:12 this morning, he did not see his shadow.
Jimmy's handlers say he has an accuracy rate of 80-percent, and Punxatawney Phil in Pennsylvania is only right about half that much. Once again today, the two groundhogs were at odds. Phil saw his shadow, and predicted six more weeks of winter.
Folks in much of Wisconsin can hardly see anything outside today, much less their shadows. It was so foggy in Dousman at seven o'clock that visibilities were less than a quarter-mile. The National Weather Service says widespread fog will hang around until late this morning in southern and western Wisconsin. And smaller areas of fog will linger in other parts of the state. Northeast Wisconsin expects fog on-and-off all the way until tomorrow. The Weather Service said the fog actually froze in some places this morning. The same weather pattern also brought light snow to central and northern Wisconsin overnight. The far north had up to an inch. Forecasters expect another round of heavy fog tonight due to light winds and low-level moisture. Southern Wisconsin could get some light rain or snow tomorrow night and Saturday. But it's supposed to stay dry elsewhere, and temperatures will stay mild.
