Sunday State Sports Briefs: UWGB women's hoops improves to 20-0
Wisconsin Sports-- The undefeated women’s basketball team at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay had no trouble with UW-Milwaukee, 85-39, Saturday night.
GREEN BAY - The undefeated women’s basketball team at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay had no trouble with UW-Milwaukee, 85-39, Saturday night.
The ranking of 10th is the highest-ever for the Phoenix women. Julie Wojta scored 16 points in limited playing time as Green Bay improved its record to 20-0, including 10-0 in the Horizon League. Five Phoenix players scored in double figures. Reserve Hannah Quilling and Angela Rodriguez led the Panthers with 12 points. Milwaukee’s record is 6-15, 2-8 in the league.

Freshman Pat Connaughton did most of the damage, scoring 23 points to lead Notre Dame to a surprising 76-59 rout of No. 15 ranked Marquette. Connaughton hit 5-of-8 three-pointers and took down 11 rebounds as the Fighting Irish won a fourth game in a row. Vander Blue and Darius Johnson-Odom led the Golden Eagles with a dozen points each. Cold long-range shooting doomed Marquette, hitting just two-of-13 three pointers. Marquette coach Buzz Williams says poor perimeter defense was the difference in the losing effort. The Eagles had won seven straight Big East Conference games until Saturday. Five of Notre Dame’s 15 wins this season have come against ranked opponents.

Paris Gulley was hot from outside the arc, nailing six three-pointers on the way to a 20 point performance. Gulley led the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to an 81-75 win over UW-Green Bay. Kaylon Williams added 16 points and eight assists. The Panthers led most of the way, but never had a margin of more than 10 points. Keifer Sykes scored 25 to lead the Phoenix. Alec Brown had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Milwaukee hit 12-of-23 from outside the three-point line, while Gulley was 6-of-7. The Panthers' record is 15-10, including 8-5 in the Horizon League. The Phoenix fall to 9-13, including 5-7 in league play.

Aggressive play wasn’t enough for the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team at home Saturday night. The Badgers hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Cloud State in front of over 13,000 fans at the Kohl Center Saturday, giving the Huskies a sweep of the weekend action. Wisconsin took 42 shots on goal and held a 1-0 lead going into the final period. St. Cloud State scored twice to take the victory in Badger coach Mike Eaves 400th game. Wisconsin took 18 shots in the final period but none found the range. Wisconsin’s record drops to 12-14-2, including 7-13-2 in the WCHA.

Green Bay Packer quarterback Aaron Rodgers says awards are nice, but he’d rather be playing today. Rodgers was named the 2011 Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player last night. The Green Bay signal-caller got 48 votes to just two for record-setting New Orleans QB Drew Brees. He is the third quarterback in a row to get the MVP award and the first Packer since Brett Favre in 1997. Rodgers led the league in passing with a 122-point-5 rating. He had 45 touchdown passes and only six interceptions. He says consistency is the key to his success. But, he’d rather being played in today’s Super Bowl 46.
