Morning State Sports Briefs: UWGB women now longer unbeaten

Wisconsin Sports
-- The UW-Green Bay women snapped a 40-game regular season winning streak with a 70-58 home loss to Detroit last night.

GREEN BAY - The UW-Green Bay women snapped a 40-game regular season winning streak with a 70-58 home loss to Detroit last night.

The ninth-ranked Phoenix was one of two unbeaten teams coming in. But now, only No. 1 Baylor has that distinction. Green Bay went down by 14 points early. They fought back to go up by three with just over eight minutes left -- but they went cold, scoring just two points in the next seven minutes. The Titans held Green Bay to just 29-percent shooting. Detroit had a 47-to-32 rebounding edge. They went to the free-throw line 35 times to just 13 for Green Bay. And Detroit made the most of it, scoring its final 16 free shots. Julie Wojta had 16 points and nine rebounds for Green Bay, which was without starting forward Sarah Eichler. She injured an ankle at practice this week. Shareta Brown scored 24 points for Detroit, and coach Autumn Rademacher -- a former Phoenix assistant -- could hardly keep her excitement in afterward as Detroit won its first game in Green Bay since 1997. The Titans improved to 9-3 in the Horizon League and 13-11 overall. Green Bay fell to 10-1 in the conference and 20-1 overall. They'll try to bounce back tomorrow at home against Wright State.

The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team failed to make a basket in the first five minutes last night, and they went on to lose at Penn State 69-54. The 18th-ranked Lady Lions went up by 15 at the half. Wisconsin got to within eight with about 12 minutes left, but Penn State then pulled away. The Lions out-shot the Badgers 48-to-37 percent. Wisconsin -- which made a school-record 12 three-pointers last time out -- was only 1-of-12 against Penn State. Anya Covington returned from a medical issue and scored 20 points for the Badgers, who dropped to 4-8 in the Big Ten and 8-16 overall. Maggie Lucas scored 16 for Penn State, which improved to 9-3 in the conference and 8-and-16 overall. Wisconsin's next game is against Michigan State at home next Thursday night.

The UW-Milwaukee women dropped to 2-9 in the Horizon League with a 64-to-52 home loss to Wright State last night. The Panthers were up by two points early in the second half, but Wright State went on a 20-to-2 run to take control. The Raiders shot 53-percent in the second half, after being held to 29-percent in the first 20 minutes. Sami Tucker and Ashley Green each scored 12 points for Milwaukee, which fell to 6-and-16 overall. Molly Fox had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Wright State, which improved to 9-and-3 in conference play and 16-and-8 overall. Milwaukee will host Detroit tomorrow. Tonight, the UW-Milwaukee men will play at Detroit. And the Green Bay men are at Wright State.

Brandon Jennings did not get picked as an NBA All-Star last night, and it's the eighth straight year the Milwaukee Bucks are being left out of the mid-season affair. The Eastern and Western Conference reserves were announced, as chosen by the league's coaches. The East back-ups will be Luol Deng of Chicago, Chris Bosh of Miami, Joe Johnson of Atlanta, Paul Pierce of Boston, Andre Igoudala of Philadelphia, and Deron Williams of New Jersey. Jennings is the third-leader among Eastern Conference guards, behind Williams and East starter Derrick Rose. The 22-year-old Jennings is averaging around 19 points and five assists per game. He reacted to his snub by tweeting, "Just gotta work even harder now." But Jennings was not the only big name left out. Rajon Rondo of Boston and Josh Smith of Atlanta failed to make the cut as well. The All-Star Game will be played February 26th in Orlando. Meanwhile, the Bucks return to action tonight in Cleveland, after winning in Toronto on Wednesday night.

The attorney for former UW-Madison athletic administrator John Chadima accuses interim chancellor David Ward of quote, "engaging in a reckless campaign of character assassination." Charles Giesen issued a statement to that effect yesterday, after Ward said that UW Police were investigating a third allegation against Chadima. Ward did not disclose the nature of the allegation, but he said it involved another male -- and like the first two, police deemed it to be credible. Giesen said it was quote, "irresponsible to make vague and unsubstantiated allegations, and to vouch for the credibility of an anonymous accuser during an ongoing investigation." Chadima resigned just over a month ago, after it was learned that he sexually assault a male UW employee after a party in his hotel suite at the Rose Bowl in the Los Angeles area. Details of the two subsequent allegations were not disclosed. Ward said retired Judge Patrick Fiedler was reviewing them. Vice-chancellor Vince Sweeney called the situation "difficult" for everyone involved, and the university has tried to take the steps necessary to move the process forward. Chadima has not been charged in any of the cases.

Former Milwaukee Brewers' prospect Nelson Cruz has signed a new two-year contract with the Texas Rangers. The 31-year-old Cruz batted .263 last year with 29 homers and a career-high 87 RBI's. And he broke the Major League record for homers in a playoff series with six against Detroit in the American League Championship Series. Cruz was on Milwaukee's Triple-"A" farm club when he was traded to Texas with Carlos Lee in a 2006 deal that sent closer Francisco Cordero to Milwaukee. The Rangers started playing Cruz almost immediately, and he has starred for them ever since. He has a .270 career batting average with 106 homers and 323 RBI's.

The city-and-county panel that operates Lambeau Field is putting up at least $25,000 dollars to encourage the WIAA to move its high school basketball tournaments to Green Bay. The high school association is expected to decide next month whether to move the basketball and wrestling tournaments from the Kohl Center in Madison. That’s because of UW hockey conflicts at the arena, and a high cost to fans of attending the tournament games there. The UW is trying to convince the WIAA to stay on campus. The group is also considering the Alliant Energy Center as an option to keeping the tournaments in Madison. In Green Bay, the city-and-Brown County Stadium District Board agreed to provide $25,000 to help off-set the expenses of running the high school tournaments the first year. And district director Patrick Webb was authorized to spend another $25,000 with the board’s consultation. Board chairwoman Ann Patteson calls it a “good investment,” saying the boys-and-girls basketball tournaments would bring up to nine-million dollars to the local economy in the first year. The Lambeau stadium district gets its money from a half-percent sales tax in Brown County, a 10-percent tax on Packer game tickets, license plate fees, an income tax check-off, revenue from commemorative tiles at Lambeau, and interest on investments.

Madison area native Amanda Kessel has been named the WCHA women’s hockey player-of-the-week on offense. Kessel, a sophomore at the University of Minnesota, had three goals and five assists in a two-game sweep of Saint Cloud State last weekend. Kessel also became just the ninth player in the history of Minnesota women’s hockey to score six points in single game, when she had two goals and four assists last Friday night. Kessel, from Verona, is the sister of NHL All-Star Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

UW-La Crosse had almost half the athletes who were named to the WIAC’s all-time women’s gymnastics team. Eight La Crosse gymnasts were among 17 highlighted as part of the league’s 100th anniversary celebration next year. All of those selected had competed since 1983. The La Crosse representatives are Tricia Adkins, Gabi Hooper, Jennifer Houle, Lisa Kartman, Kim MacKrille, Becky McDonnell, Keri Motz, and Nina Schubert. Oshkosh has five gymnasts on the all-time women’s team – Tiffany Barden, Amy Webb, Lynnda Hahn, Debbie Lindemer, and Mary Leivian. Naomi DeLara of Stout was the most recent gymnast to be honored. She competed from 2008-through-last-year. Meghan Hargens of Stout was also chosen, along with Justine Weyer of Whitewater and Merilee Healy of River Falls. La Crosse coach Barb Gibson was named the coach for the all-time women’s team. She’s still with the Eagles, and has headed the program since 1986.
