WIAA wrestling regionals scheduled for Saturday

The first step to Madison and the WIAA individual and team wrestling tournaments begins Saturday with the regional meet.

The first step to Madison and the WIAA individual and team wrestling tournaments begins Saturday with the regional meet.

Ellsworth hosts a Division 2 meet beginning at 10:30 a.m. The teams competing there will be the host and No. 3 ranked Panthers along with Baldwin-Woodville, Bloomer/Colfax, Cornell/Gilman/Lake Holcombe, Durand, Somerset and St. Croix Central.

Prescott and No. 2 Spring Valley/Elmwood will be at the Division 3 Boyceville Regional which also begins at 10:30 a.m. Also competing there are No. 9 ranked Glenwood City and No. 10 Boyceville along with Mondovi and Cadott.

The Panthers will be aiming for their 40th regional championship but they face their toughest challenge in a regional in eight years as St. Croix Central brings in a strong, full squad to compete along with a solid Somerset team and good individual wrestlers from Durand, Baldwin-Woodville and Bloomer/Colfax who may effect the outcome of the team score through the seeding process and by winning individual titles.

Truth be told EHS head coach Chad Steldt would prefer to separate the dual and individual tournament process similar to Minnesota. But no matter how set up the playoffs, Steldt feels the Panthers have to wrestle with intensity to be successful and hope that plus their own individual skills, the home crowd and the strength of their competition will carry them to another title.

"We want our technique to be sound but we need to wrestle with passion and intensity and aggressively," Steldt said. "We can't wrestle to defend, we have to wrestle to win."

Spring Valley/Elmwood and Prescott are both looking for redemption in the Boyceville Regional. SVE want to do much better than they did in Boyceville last year, where the redbirds finished a disappointing third despite winning the D-SC championship the week before and Prescott is looking to rebound from wretched last weekend performance in the Middle Border Conference meet where hopes of a top four finish wound up crashing all the way to sixth place.

SV/Elmwood will be wrestling for its first regional title since 1999. The team winners go onto the sectional meet Tuesday, which in Division 2 is at Somerset and Division 3 is in Cadott. The top two individuals in each regional head to the individual sectional meets next Saturday, which in Division 2 is at Osceola and Division 3 is at Osseo-Fairchild High School in Osseo (hosted by Independence/Gilmanton).
