Minnesota Sports Briefs: Lynx sign free agent Thorn
Minnesota Sports-- The Minnesota Lynx signed guard Erin Thorn on Monday. Thorn spent the last three seasons with the Chicago Sky.
MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Lynx signed guard Erin Thorn on Monday. Thorn spent the last three seasons with the Chicago Sky.
She appeared in 34 games in 2011, making seven starts and averaging 54 points and 2.4 assists while shooting 39.5 percent from three-point range. The BYU product played the first six years of her career with the New York Liberty and owns averages of 5.1 points, 1.5 assists and 1.4 rebounds in 251 career games.

The Minnesota Golden Gopher men's basketball team is back on the court this evening as it continues Big Ten play against sixth-ranked Ohio State at Williams Arena. The Gophers suffered a 68-61 overtime loss to No. 22 Wisconsin last Thursday to fall to 5-and-7 in the Big Ten. They are 17-8 overall. Minnesota has lost five straight meetings to Ohio State. The last time the Gophers beat the Buckeyes was during the 2008-09 season.

Minnesota State-Moorhead senior guard D.J. Hamilton of Avondale, Arizona is this week's NSIC men's basketball Player of the Week. Hamilton averaged more than 22-points-per-game in a pair of MSU wins over the weekend. The Dragons have won four straight and are 17-5 on the year. Minnesota State-Moorhead senior forward Angie Jetvig of Hawley is this week's women's honoree. She helped the Dragons to two wins over the weekend, as well, including a triple overtime victory over Bemidji State on Saturday.

The MIAC has announced its weekly award winners in men's and women's basketball. St. Olaf guard Bobby Fong of Bloomington is the men's honoree after averaging 22 points per game in a pair of Ole wins last week. Macalester senior Holly Schiedermayer of Waupaca won the women's Player of the Week citation after helping the Scots to two wins last week.

Hamline senior goaltender Beau Christian of Moorhead is this week's MIAC men's hockey Player of the Week. He helped the Pipers to a weekend split, stopping 68 of the 70 shots he faced. Augsburg freshman netminder Brianna Schulz of Prior Lake is the league's women's Player of the Week. She recorded 86 saves in two games last weekend. Her team lost and tied the two contests.

Both Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota fell in this week's national men's college hockey poll released by USCHO.com. The Bulldogs dipped one spot to No. 4 this week, while the Gophers tumbled five spots to seventh. Ferris State is the new top-ranked team in the nation, according to the survey. Nothing changed at the top of the women's poll, with Wisconsin leading the way at No. 1, followed by Minnesota at No. 2. Minnesota-Duluth dropped out of the women's rankings this week.

The Minnesota Wild are back on the ice this evening as they continue a four-game homestand against the Anaheim Ducks at The X. Tonight's game faces off at 6:30 p.m. The Wild have lost four straight games to fall to 25-22-8 on the season. They suffered a 3-1 setback to Columbus on Saturday. Minnesota wraps up the homestay on Thursday against the Winnipeg Jets.

The Wild recalled forward Kris Foucault and defenseman Marco Scandella from AHL affiliate Houston. Foucault has never before appeared in an NHL, so if he gets in tonight against the Ducks, it will be the debut for the 21-year-old Calgary native. The 21-year-old Scandella has played in 37 games for the Wild this year.

All Randy Moss wants for his birthday is a return to the NFL. On his 35th birthday yesterday, Moss told an audience on UStream.tv that he wants to make a comeback. The seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver retired last August after 13 seasons. The former Viking has 954 career receptions for nearly 15-thousand yards and 153 touchdowns. Only Jerry Rice has more TD catches. In 2010, Moss had a combined 28 receptions for 393 yards and five scores with New England, Minnesota and Tennessee.
