UW could pick up another transfer quarterback

MADISON - Last year, quarterback Russell Wilson fell into Wisconsin's lap when he graduated early from N.C. State, and chose the Badgers for his final year of eligibility. Now, former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien is thinking about doing the same thing.

Maryland released O'Brien from his scholarship yesterday, so he can get a fresh start for his final two years of eligibility. He's expected to graduate early from Maryland in the spring. And if that happens, he'll be eligible this fall. And the Baltimore Sun says Wisconsin is on O'Brien's list of transfer possibilities, along with Michigan State, Stanford, and Vanderbilt.

There's no indication that Wisconsin might be interested. And Maryland excluded Vanderbilt from O'Brien's transfer list -- which means he could not get athletic financial aid if he goes there. O'Brien had the ACC's fourth-best passer rating as a freshman at 134.5. But he struggled in his sophomore year. And his season ended when he broke a bone in his non-throwing arm against Notre Dame.

Right now, the Badgers have four relatively inexperienced quarterbacks. Joe Brennan played six games last year as a back-up to Wilson. The others are Curt Phillips, Joel Stave, and Jon Budmayr.
