Morning State Sports Briefs: Hockey regionals mostly go according to seed
Wisconsin Sports-- There were almost no surprises last night as the boys’ state high school hockey regionals got underway. Three teams seeded lower than their opponents pulled off mild upsets – and in each case, a Number-nine seed prevailed over a Number-eight.
There were almost no surprises last night as the boys’ state high school hockey regionals got underway. Three teams seeded lower than their opponents pulled off mild upsets – and in each case, a Number-nine seed prevailed over a Number-eight.
Tomah, Germantown, and De Pere-West De Pere scored those victories. Twenty-three higher seeds moved on. Mosinee won the most lop-sided game of the night, 15-to-2 over Merrill. Waunakee also scored 15 times in a 12-goal victory over DeForest. None of the eight top-seeds played, as 38 teams received byes to tomorrow night’s second round. That included last year’s state champion, Wausau West. Sixty-four teams are still alive for tomorrow night’s regional finals.

The Milwaukee Admirals broke their longest home losing streak in 13 years with a 3-0 victory over Houston last night. The Admirals ended five straight losses at the Bradley Center. Goal-tender Jeremy Smith had 23 saves, including 13 in the third period, to get his second shutout of the season. Smith ended a personal six-game losing streak. Chris Mueller, Joel Champagne, and Jonathon Blum scored for Milwaukee, which won its first home contest since January 14th.

The UW-Madison Athletic Board will be asked on Friday to adopt variable pricing for any Badger single-game football tickets that might become available this season. Season-ticket holders would continue to pay $42-dollars for all games. But if tickets become available for Michigan, Ohio State, or Minnesota, they’d go for $65. The Badgers want to charge $55-dollars for Illinois, and $45 for Northern Iowa, Utah State, and Texas El-Paso. Wisconsin would join eight other Big Ten schools that have variable pricing for football. The UW finance committee endorsed the variable price hikes yesterday. They also recommended a price hike for Badger men’s basketball tickets, but only in the lower level. Season tickets would rise from $24 a game to 28, and single-game tickets would go up from $26 to 30.

Former Milwaukee Brewers’ manager Ned Yost will apparently stay at Kansas City for awhile. The Royals have picked up a one-year option on Yost’s contract, and they’ll keep paying him through 2013. Yost was named as KC’s skipper in May of 2010, replacing the fired Trey Hillman. Two months later, Yost was given a contract extension through 2012 with a team option for ’13. Yost has led the Royals to a record of 126-163 – including a 71-91 mark last season. He managed the Brewers from 2003 until September of ’08, when he was fired with just 12 games left in the regular season as Milwaukee stumbled before getting its first playoff bid since 1982.

Ben Aalfs of UW-Superior and Kassie Robinson of La Crosse are the WIAC men’s-and-women’s basketball players of the week. Aalfs, a senior forward, made a three-pointer with one-point-one seconds left to give Superior at two-point upset over then fourth-ranked Whitewater. Aalfs led the Yellowjackets in that game with 18 points. Robinson, a senior center, had 23 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots in a La Crosse win over Stout. And she had 19 points and nine boards in a victory over Platteville. Robinson also made the national D3 Team-of-the-Week.
The WIAC also recognized Jordan Singer of Eau Claire in men’s hockey – Aric Hoeschen of La Crosse and Christy Cazzola of Oshkosh in indoor track – Tony Sigrist of Eau Claire and Alexia Child of Oshkosh in field events – Sam Engelland of Oshkosh in wrestling – and Jamie Ries of Gustavus Adolphus and Courtney Benson of Winona in women’s gymnastics.

Emily Schudrowitz of Saint Norbert has been named the Midwest Conference women’s indoor track performer-of-the-week. Schudrowitz, a senior, had the league’s best time of the season in the 800-meters at 2:13.70 at the Grand Valley State Big Meet. That mark is also among the Top-10 so far in the NCAA’s Division III

It was a year ago on Friday when former University of Wisconsin men’s hockey goal-tender Kirk Daubenspeck was seriously injured in a foggy traffic crash near Dodgeville. Now, he’s on the road to recovery. And Badger fans will get to be a part of that recovery when Daubenspeck drops the ceremonial first pick on Friday night when the Badgers play Denver at the Kohl Center in Madison. The 37-year-old Daubenspeck, a former Wisconsin All-American from the mid-1990’s, had severe head injuries when his car hit a semi-truck while he was heading to Madison on February 17th of 2011. He was in an extended coma following the mishap. Daubenbeck’s teammates, friends, relatives, and others at the UW all played roles in his recovery with personal support, contributions, and fund-raisers.
