The question of who goes onto Madison for the state individual wrestling tournament gets decided Saturday for Pierce County prep wrestlers.
The question of who goes onto Madison for the state individual wrestling tournament gets decided Saturday for Pierce County prep wrestlers.
The county will send 25 wrestlers into the Division 2 Osceola Individual Sectional and the Division 3 Independence/Gilmanton Sectional which will be held at Osseo-Fairchild High School. Both meet start at 10 a.m. sharp.
The top three advance to the state meet next weekend in Madison.
Ellsworth has 11 wrestlers at Osceola and head coach Chad Steldt hopes some gained enough confidence from Tuesday's team sectional meet to help them make it through their respective brackets.
"We have wrestler who faced good competition Tuesday and they wrestled well," Steldt said. "Hopefully it will make them realize their potential."
The Division 3 meet at Osseo features 11 Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestlers and three more from Prescott. PHS head coach Paul Johnson likes his wrestlers chances.
"Josh (Farr) is determined to get back to state and I wouldn't rule out Matt (Pechacek) or Alex (Stuhl) either," Johnson said. "Matt is doing a good job riding right now, which always a plus in at this time of year and Alex (Stuhl) has bracket he may be able to sneak through if he wrestlers really well Saturday."
Spring Valley/Elmwood head coach Carter Turner hopes the momentum from winning the program's first-ever team sectional title can carry some Redbird wrestlers to individual state as well.
"We're winning close matches and that's been a problem in the past trying to get more than just Brady (Webb) down state," Turner said. "If we keep winning the close ones like we've been doing we'll have a good-sized contingent to take to state."
Webb is a defending sectional champ as is Ellsworth's Jens Lantz, Roarke Langer and Parker Hines.
