Saturday State Sports Briefs: Bucks leads vanishes, lose to Magic

Wisconsin Sports
-- The Milwaukee Bucks were sailing along with a 10-point lead and less than 10 minutes to go – when the roof fell in. The Orlando Magic outscored the Bucks 22-3 to snatch a 94-85 victory on the court where next weekend’s NBA All-Star game will be played.

ORLANDO - The Milwaukee Bucks were sailing along with a 10-point lead and less than 10 minutes to go – when the roof fell in. The Orlando Magic outscored the Bucks 22-3 to snatch a 94-85 victory on the court where next weekend’s NBA All-Star game will be played.

Dwight Howard led Orlando with 26 points and 20 rebounds. It was the 12th straight time Milwaukee lost to the Magic on their home court. Carlos Delfino led the Bucks with 16 points, while three players – Brandon Jennings, Shaun Livingston and Ersan Ilyasova added 14 apiece. Milwaukee’s record is now 12-18. The Bucks had started the fourth period by scoring the first eight points for an 82-72 lead with 9:47 to go, then Orlando took over and won going away.

Two goals in the final period blew a close game wide open as Denver shutout the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey squad 3-0 Friday night. The Pioneers continued their dominance against the homestanding Badgers. Wisconsin has won just two of its last 11 meetings against Denver. The Badger record fell to 12-15-2 with the loss, including 7-14-2 in WCHA conference competition. The first period was scoreless and the Pioneers only led 1-0 after two. The loss was the fifth in a row for Wisconsin.

Friday afternoon’s 7-1 rout of Ohio State gives the University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team sole possession of this year’s WCHA regular-season title. Carolyn Prevost and Brianna Decker scored two goals apiece as Wisconsin improved its record to 29-2-2, including 23-2-2-1 in conference play. The Badgers earned the number-one seed for the upcoming WCHA playoffs. Karley Sylvester and Brittany and Brooke Ammerman also scored in the easy victory. Wisconsin finishes its regular season this afternoon at 12:30 p.m. in the Kohl Center. The team’s five seniors will be recognized prior to the face-off.

Lefty Phil Mickelson holds a one-shot lead halfway through the North Trust Open at Pacific Palisades, California. Mickelson is six shots under par, a single stroke ahead of Pat Perez. At five over par, Pewaukee native Mark Wilson is projected to miss the cut.

Larry Mize sizzled to a 10 under par 62 in Friday’s first round of the ACE Group Championship in Naples, Florida. Dan Forsman shot a three under 69, but the hot start by Mize means the Rhinelander native is seven shots off the pace and tied for 18th going into today’s second round of the 54-hole Champions Tour tournament.
