SUPERIOR - Police in Superior say they have no idea why Luke Anderson drove into a drug-store parking lot on Friday and tried to steal another car. The incident resulted in a chase with police that ended in a gunfight in which the 34-year-old Anderson was killed.

Superior Police Chief Charles LaGesse said Anderson's car was not stolen, and it was not being sought by officers before the drug-store incident. The chief said Anderson's car was running in the parking lot as he confronted a woman and tried to steal her car -- but it didn't start right away, so he ran back to his own vehicle and took off. LeGesse said it might have been a matter of Anderson not finding the right key -- because he was only in the woman's car for a very short time.

An autopsy on Anderson's body was finished yesterday, but the results have not been released. The state Justice Department has taken charge of the investigation.
