Sixteen Pierce County wrestlers are all aiming for a podium shot at the 69th WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Madison at the Kohl Center.
Ellsworth has the largest Pierce County contingent with seven wrestlers led by returning state champions Jens Lantz and Roarke Langer along with runner-up Parker Hines, all of whom won sectional titles last weekend. The Panthers also feature four wrestlers making their state tourney debuts in Brent Stockwell, Logan Kemmerer, Ryan Dickhausen and Gabe Frandsen.
Just behind the Panthers is Pierce County's other top-ranked prep wrestling squad Spring Valley/Elmwood. They will have six wrestlers at state led by senior Brady Webb. This time the two time state runner-up will have some company this year at state with Nick Berg, Conner Sieracki, Brian Fesemaier, Andy Bune and Tyler Hunter joining him. Both Webb and Hunter won sectional titles last weekend.
"It will be good for him to have his teammates down on the floor wrestling in the meet instead of just in the stands, it will be a big help," SVE head coach Carter Turner said.
SVE has its largest group at state in program history and Prescott has its largest grouping down there in a decade. The Cardinals will be led by sectional champ Josh Farr, who is back at state after a year's absence due to injury, along with Matt Pechacek and Alex Stuhl.
"It means a lot to make back down there after all I've been through and after all the work I've put in to reach that goal," Farr said.
Prelim rounds in Division 2 and 3 begin Thursday evening and quarterfinal round begins Friday morning. Semis are Friday evening and on Saturday the day's wrestling is consolation rounds and placement matches followed by the state finals beginning at 6 p.m.
