.500 prelim round for Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling

Two wrestlers won and two lost for Spring Valley/Elmwood in Thursday's preliminary round at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.

MADISON - Two wrestlers won and two lost for Spring Valley/Elmwood in Thursday's preliminary round at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.

Moving on to the quarterfinals for the Redbirds was Brian Fesenmaier at 160 and Andy Bune at 182. Nick Berg at 126 and Conner Sieracki at 138 both fell in their first round matches.

Fesenmaier survived a tough match with Westby's Ben Hauser, winning 5-3. Fesenmaier said he's glad to get first match out of the way in his first state meet.

"I could have wrestled better so I'm happy to win and move on," Fesenmaier said. "I know I'll open up and wrestle better my next match now that the first one is over with."

Bune only led 2-1 going into the third period in his 182-pound, Division 3 match-up with Rosholt's Tommy Johnson. But then he scored a takedown and two-point nearfall to win 7-1.

"Brian and Andy have been winning close matches all season so I'm happy to see that carry over to state," SVE head coach Carter Turner said.

Berg was pinned by Ozaukee's Logan Smith in 3:12 while Sieracki gave everything he had against defending state champ Trey Theisen,scoring the first takedown and scoring a reversal in the third period to trail only by one point 6-5. But Theisen was able to score the key takedown of the third period which decided the match 9-5 in his favor.

Fesenmaier and Bune will team up with Brady Webb and Tyler Hunter to wrestle for SV/Elmwood in the quarterfinals today starting at 11 a.m. Webb wrestles Random Lake's Mark Meyer (Sr. 39-8) in a sneak preview of next week's team tournament; Fesenmaier wrestles Princeton's Taylor Sina (Jr. 20-4); Bune takes on Mineral Point's Robby Chubb (Jr. 38-1) and Hunter faces Pittsville's Ollie Voight (Jr. 44-2).

Winner go to the semifinals tonight at 7 p.m. while the rest are wrestling in the consolation round this afternoon.
