MADISON - Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestler Brady Webb gets one more shot at a WIAA state championship after beating up Lancaster's Kyle Mezera 4-0 in the Division 3, 120-pound state tournament semifinals Friday evening at the Kohl Center.
After a scoreless first period Webb struck first on the scoreboard with a reversal in the second period and was able to ride out Mazera for the rest of the period. He then hit up Mezera for a takedown in the third period.
"I kept scrambling trying to find out what worked and I then used it the whole match," Webb said afterward.
Webb will face Oshkosh Lourdes junior Austin Loos (46-6) in the finals starting at 6 p.m. tonight. Loos was a state runner-up last year like Webb.
Webb will be the lone SVE wrestler in the finals as teammate Brian Fesenmaier came just short of making it. Fesenmaier and his opponent, Coleman's Mike Mergener, were locked, literally, in both a 3-3 tie and in a hold to see who could get the winning takedown in the third period. It would be Mergener who got the two points and a three-point nearfall to win 8-3 at 160.
Fesenmaier will wrestle for third through sixth place this morning and afternoon.
