Saturday State Sports Briefs: Bogut won't need surgery on ankle

MILWAUKEE - Andrew Bogut got the kind of news he and the Milwaukee Bucks were hoping for – he won’t need surgery on his fractured left ankle.

Bogut’s ankle was scanned by the team’s orthopedic surgeon yesterday. Dr. Michael Gordon said the ankle was healing properly and it will be examined again in a month. Bogut was injured in a game against Houston January 25th. He is still expected to be out of action for eight to 12 weeks. So far this season the seven footer has missed 21 games. The Bucks have won just six of those.

Wisconsin boxer Luis Arias has been suspended for a year for failing to meet requirements three times. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency says it couldn’t find Arias for out-of-competition drug testing as is required. Arias is from Oak Creek. The three violations came in an 18-month period.

The 39th annual American Birkebeiner, North America’s largest cross-country ski race is held today. Media Coordinator Susan Kendrick says conditions on the Birkie Trail between Hayward and Cable ought to be excellent. Unlike much of the rest of the state, Kendrick says the Hayward area has had timely snowfall dating back to December. The weather also looks to be ideal for some 9,500 participants in the Birkie and related events. With a projected high temperature of 25 degrees, Kendrick says skiers can expect “a perfect blue wax type of day.” Saturday will be special for John Kotar and Ernie St. Germaine — they’re the only remaining founders who’ve skied every Birkie since 1973. A third founder, Dave Landgraf, was killed in a bicycle accident last August.
