MADISON - Ellsworth High School's wrestling team added two more individual wrestling championships to its already sizeable collection Saturday evening as Jens Lantz and Parker Hines both won championships at the 69th WIAA State Tournament.
Lantz, a sophomore, became the first EHS's latest repeat champion since Hayden Hauschildt in 2008-09 by taking the Division 2,113-pound title by a 10-0 score over Port Washington freshman Zach Smith.
Lantz got control of the match after a scoreless first period and never let go.
An hour later Parker Hines capped his Ellsworth career with a state championship at 195 defeating Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal senior Dan Schoen for the second time this season (the only two losses Schoen has had) by a 6-5 score.
The score of the match was tied 2-2 heading into the third period and Hines gave up an escape point to be in a neutral position. But that's where he was best as he began to take single-leg shots on Schoen which led to doubles which helped score two takedowns in the final period.
The two titles make for 24, the number of individual championships the program has won since beginning in 1958.
