UW men pucksters get first road sweep of season, women move on in playoffs
Wisconsin Sports-- It was a successful weekend for the two University of Wisconsin hockey programs. The men got their first road series weep of the season at Bemidji State and the women swept Minnesota State to advance in the WCHA Playoffs.
It was a successful weekend for the two University of Wisconsin hockey programs. The men got their first road series weep of the season at Bemidji State and the women swept Minnesota State to advance in the WCHA Playoffs.
The Badgers beat Bemidji State 4-2 Saturday. The third straight victory improves the men's team record to 15-15-2, including 10-14-2 in the WCHA. The modest three-game winning streak is the longest of the season for Wisconsin. Justin Schultz scored the game winning goal at 3:47 of the third period. He has 15 goals and 42 assists, by far the most points by a college defenseman this season. Other goals were scored by freshman Brad Navin, and sopohomores Sean Little and Mark Zengerle. With 35 shots on goal, compared to 23 by Bemidji, the Badgers outshot an opponent for the fifth time in the last six games.
The Wisconsin women's hockey team plays its way into the WCHA Final Face-Off with a 4-0 shutout of Minnesota State. The Badgers will play Minnesota-Duluth in the semifinals starting next Friday. Goalie Alex Rigsby came up with her second straight shutout and ninth of the season. Four different Badgers scored goals -- Katy Josephs, Carolyne Prevost, Booke Ammerman and Brianna Decker. Wisconsin will take a 31-3-2 record into next Friday's game at Duluth vs. number-four seed UMD.
