Wisconsin Sports-- Brookfield will play Wausau West, and Verona will face Green Bay Notre Dame in tonight’s semi-finals of the WIAA boys’ state high school hockey tournament.
MADISON - Brookfield will play Wausau West, and Verona will face Green Bay Notre Dame in tonight’s semi-finals of the WIAA boys’ state high school hockey tournament.
All four teams won their quarter-final games yesterday in Madison. Brookfield (a co-op team of East and Central high schools) got by Eau Claire Memorial 3-2 in overtime. P.J. Corbett scored the game-winner at 2:07 into the extra period. Defending champion Wausau West eliminated Milwaukee Marquette 4-1. Kyle Lee had two goals and an assist for West. Green Bay Notre Dame topped Superior 5-1. Tony Stillwell scored twice for Notre Dame. And Verona crushed Sparta 8-0. Eddie Matsushima had two goals and two assists, and Zac Keryluk scored twice.
Meanwhile, the girls’ state hockey tournament begins this afternoon at the Alliant Energy Center with the semi-finals. A new champion will be crowned, after three-time defending titlist River Falls went down to defeat in last weekend’s sectionals. Hayward/Spooner takes on Schofield D.C. Everest co-op at noon today, and the Onalaska co-p will then play Kettle Moraine. Title

The Milwaukee Bucks will play at Atlanta tonight, and coach Scott Skiles says they need to pick up the pace. The Bucks appeared lifeless in the third quarter on Wednesday night, when Boston went on a 25-6 run to win the game, and drop Milwaukee to three-and-a-half games out of playoff contention with 32 contests left. Skiles said his team needs to compete for all 48 minutes. As he put it, “We have a small margin of error, and we have to be on 100-percent mentally-and-physically every minute we’re in the game.” He said there are pockets of each game when opponents are really taking it to the Bucks, and they need to rise up and quote, “go for it.” The Bucks are 14-21, and they’ll play at Atlanta team that’s five games above .500.

The Phoenix were up by as many as 30 in the second half. Julie Wojta scored 24 points, as Green Bay improved to 16-1 in the Horizon League and 26-1 overall. Monica Albano had 14 points for Loyola, which dropped to 7-10 in the conference and 12-and-16 overall. Green Bay, which clinched the league season title last week, reached 26 wins for the eighth time in school history. They’ll close out the regular season tomorrow at Illinois-Chicago.
