Ottman donates labor at Viet vets’ memorial park

SPRING VALLEY—As a Vietnam War veteran, Jim Ottman appreciates the significance of The Highground, the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial Project, Inc., near Neillsville.
Ottman of Spring Valley has attended public events at the site billing itself as “Our Country’s Premier Manned Veterans Park.” Indeed, he told of plans Friday to take the helicopter displayed by this area’s Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) chapter, in which he’s a member, to the park in Clark County again this May.
But, if as this past winter’s issue of The Highground newsletter proclaims on its front page—“People do not pass through The Highground…People come home to The Highground”—a bit of Ottman himself resides there. Almost since it first opened in the 1980s, he’s been volunteering to do maintenance and improvement jobs at the location along Hwy. 10.
