Roenicke says Brewers must learn to manufacture runs with loss of Fielder

PHOENIX - Milwaukee Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke says he’ll try harder this year to manufacture runs with crafty base running. He told reporters today he wants to be more creative on the base paths due to the loss of Prince Fielder and his power.

Roenicke said it does not mean that Aramis Ramirez – whom the Brewers signed as a free agent during the winter – will be a weaker hitter in the Number-four spot. The skipper said he thought the Brewers could have run more a year ago – and if they can do it, they’ll try. But Roenicke warned that if the Brewers are running into too many outs, he’ll rein them in. The manager said he expects more things from players like Corey Hart, saying he’s quicker than a year ago.

Roenicke also said Rickie Weeks might not run as much as in the past, because he’s gotten bigger and stronger. The skipper said Spring Training would be a good test to see what they can do. The Brewers will open their exhibition season on Sunday in Phoenix against a split squad from San Francisco.
