MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 4 ranked University of Minnesota scored twice in the final period to edge the Wisconsin men’s hockey team 2-1 and get a split of the weekend series.
Tyler Barnes second period score had stood until then. The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Badgers. The Golden Gophers came out aggressive, but Joel Rumpel stopped all 15 first-period shots in a scoreless frame. Barnes scored midway through the second period, give UW a 1-0 lead. That was the way it remained until 4:47 of the final period. The U scored a shorthanded goal after a turnover on the power play by Erik Haula. Three minutes later a second Gopher score by Nate Schmidt gave Minnesota the win. Wisconsin was outshot 33-18. Both teams scored once with a man advantage.
Wisconsin’s record drops to 16-16-2, including 11-15-2 in the WCHA. The win gives the Gophers the regular season championship at 24-12-2, 20-8-0 in the WCHA. The WCHA playoffs begin next weekend. Wisconsin will be at Denver and Minnesota will host Alaska-Anchorage.
