WINONA - There's additional proof that a big and destructive type of fish is pushing farther into Minnesota waters. The Minnesota DNR says Asian carp -- a silver and a bighead -- have been confirmed on the Upper Mississippi near Winona.
The agency's Steve Hirsch says they've never seen silver carp quite that far upstream, but adds it's not a big surprise because DNA samples came up positive in the Mississippi last summer in the Twin Cities area. Hirsch says carp intercept the food chain and threaten the native Minnesota fish population.
The DNR is working to build carp barriers along the Mississippi at Coon Rapids and other points in the Twin Cities.
