Minnesota Hockey News: State high school tournament underway

-- One of the great state tournaments in all of America gets underway later today in St. Paul. The Minnesota Boys' High School Hockey Tournament enjoys a passionate following filled with annual pageantry and the usual drama and suspense that goes with state tournaments.

ST. PAUL -- One of the great state tournaments in all of America gets underway later today in St. Paul. The Minnesota Boys' High School Hockey Tournament enjoys a passionate following filled with annual pageantry and the usual drama and suspense that goes with state tournaments.

The tourney gets underway today at the Xcel Energy Center with four games in the Class 1-A. Four games in Class 2-A are set for tomorrow. The semifinals will take place on Friday, with the championship games set for Saturday. St. Thomas Academy and Little Falls get the festivities underway with an 11 a.m. contest today.

Wednesday (Class 1-A) - St. Thomas Academy vs. Little Falls, 11am

Wednesday (Class 1-A) - Breck School vs. Marshall School (Duluth), 1pm

Wednesday (Class 1-A) - Hermantown vs. Rochester Lourdes, 6pm

Wednesday (Class 1-A) - Thief River Falls vs. New Ulm, 8pm

Thursday (Class 2-A) - Maple Grove vs. Hill-Murray, 11am

Thursday (Class 2-A) - Eagan vs. Moorhead, 1pm

Thursday (Class 2-A) - Duluth East vs. Lakeville South, 6pm

Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov made 21 saves to help give the Avalanche a 7-1 victory over the Wild last night in Denver. Devin Setoguchi scored the lone goal for Minnesota, which has lost five straight. Matt Hackett started the game in net, but was pulled in the second after allowing four goals on 21 shots. Josh Harding finished the game between the pipes and was tagged for three goals on 18 shots. The Wild wrap up a brief two-game road swing tomorrow evening against the Phoenix Coyotes Last night's game was the eighth consecutive contest where Minnesota has allowed the first goal, and the sixth straight game where the opening goal has come in the game's first three-and-a-half minutes.

The Houston Aeros won their second game in three tries last night with a 7-6 shootout victory over the Abbotsford Heat. The Aeros won the shootout 3-1. The two teams play again tonight in British Columbia. The Aeros are the AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild.

St. Cloud State goaltender Mike Lee of Roseau has been named the WCHA men's hockey Defensive Player of the Week. The junior netminder helped the Huskies to a win and a tie against defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth over the weekend. He shares the honor with Colorado College goalie Josh Thorimbert. Wisconsin sophomore Mark Zengerle is the Offensive Player of the Week, while his teammate Joel Rumpal is the league's Freshman of the Week.
