MADISON - University of Wisconsin quarterback recruit Bart Houston will have minor surgery on his right throwing shoulder. Coach Bret Bielema would not give many specifics – but he said it could limit Houston’s work at the Badgers’ pre-season camp in August.

Houston comes to Madison as a highly-touted quarterback. He threw for 19-hundred-99 yards and 16 touchdowns last fall at De La Salle High School in Concord, California. And he ran for 338 yards and 17 touchdowns. Houston led the team to its third consecutive state title.

There’s a chance the Badgers could sign Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien this spring in a similar way that Russell Wilson signed a year ago. But barring that, Wisconsin’s quarterbacks have very little experience. Jon Budmayr and Curt Phillips have both had injury problems – and Joel Stave will play his freshman year after red-shirting last fall.

UW has more quarterback problems as Jon Budmayr is expected to miss all of this spring’s practices with more nerve problems with his right throwing arm. Budmayr will be a redshirt sophomore this fall. He missed all of last season with nerve trouble in the arm – and he underwent ulnar trans-position surgery. Last fall, Budmayr said a nerve under his forearm muscle rubbed against a bone every time he threw. Badgers’ coach Bret Bielema said the new problems are not much different – and he said doctors have not really gotten a handle on it. Bielema said he’s not sure if it’s a career-threatening condition. But he’s surprised it cropped up again, because Budmayr had thrown the ball well without pain or discomfort in his drills the past couple of months. The coach said Budmayr has gone through a lot of medical sessions, and they hope to get answers soon. Bielema said quote, “Our thoughts and prayers are with him.”
