OSCEOLA - Two people killed in a Polk County house fire were identified yesterday as 43-year-old Shelli Maier and her 16-year-old daughter Makayla Corbin. Both lived in a farmhouse that burned to the ground on Tuesday near Osceola.
Sheriff’s officials said Shelli’s father, Larry Maier, took his dog for a walk – and when he returned, the house was filled with smoke. He said he believed his daughter and grand-daughter were still inside – and fire-fighters battled the blaze for seven hours before finding the first body in the rubble. The other body was found more than three hours after that.
The state Fire Marshal’s office said the blaze started in the north section of the farm-house – but the exact cause has yet to be determined.
