Saturday State Sports Briefs: Brewer bats bash Cleveland 12-2

Matt Gamel hit a two-run shot and solo homers were added by Nyjer Morgan, Brooks Conrad and Jonathan Lucroy. Randy Wolf started the game and was followed by five relievers. In addition to his round-tripper, Lucroy had three hits and raised his spring training batting average to .636.

Long range bombing moves the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team into the Big Ten Conference Semifinals against top-seeded Michigan State today. The Badgers hit a tournament record 13 three-pointers enroute to a 79-71 win over Indiana. Rob Wilson had a career-high 30 points as Wisconsin improved its record to 24-8. Wilson hit 7-of-10 shots from outside the arc. The Badgers came out hot, hitting seven three-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the game. The victory marks the 10th in a row for Wisconsin over the Hoosiers, who were playing without point guard Verdell Jones III. He had torn the ACL in his right knee and is out for the rest of the season. Wilson came into the game averaging a little over three points and a little less than 11 minutes of playing time per game. His career high had been 13 points. The UW-MSU game will tip-off at 12:40 p.m. and be broadcast on CBS. State pounded Iowa 92-75 in the quarterfinals Friday. The Spartans won both match-ups against the Badgers in the regular season. The other semifinal game this afternoon pits Michigan vs. Ohio State. MSU, OSU and Michigan all tied for the conference title in the regular season with UW taking fourth.

Bubba Watson sizzled to a 10 under par 62 on Friday’s second round of the WGC Cadillac Championships in Doral, Florida. Watson is 12 under for the tournament, leading Justin Rose by one stroke entering today’s third round. Madison golfer Steve Stricker shot a two under par 70 Friday and fell into a tie for 15th, seven shots behind Watson. He’s at five under par. The only other Wisconsin golfer in the field, Pewaukee native Mark Wilson, is at two under par 142, good for a tie for 28th.

Drivers were setting a lot of records at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Friday. Kasey Kahne emerged from the field to take the pole for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400. A total of 15 drivers broke the old record set last year by Matt Kenseth. Kenseth will start 11th tomorrow. Eau Claire’s Paul Menard starts in the 26th position and Janesville’s Travis Kvapil 37th.
