MINNEAPOLIS - Alaska-Anchorage once again played the University of Minnesota men's hockey team tough in a first-round, WCHA playoff match-up at Mariucci Arena Friday. But this time the Golden Gophers came through for a 2-1 win.
The Seawolves swept the Gophers in last year's WCHA playoffs in Minneapolis.
The U takes a 1-0 lead in the team's best-of-three series. Game 2 is tonight with the face-off at 7:05 p.m. and Game 3 will be played Sunday at the same time if necessary.
After a scoreless first period the U struck for two goals in the second from Erik Haula and assisted by Nate Schmidt. UAA also had a goal in the period to make the score 2-1. But Minnesota held on for the win thanks to 16 saves from winning goalie Kent Patterson and the fact the U outshot UAA 34-17.
