Auggies in third place after first day of NCAA Division III wrestling tourney

The Augsburg College wrestling team finds itself in third place in the team standings of the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Meet at the La Crosse Center. The first day of the meet was on Friday.

LA CROSSE - The Augssburg College wrestling team finds itself in third place in the team standings of the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Meet at the La Crosse Center. The first day of the meet was on Friday.

Augusburg, coached by Ellsworth's Mark Matzek, were in third place with 47 points just one point behind meet host UW-La Crosse's 48 points. Defending national champion Wartburg, however, was comfortably out in front with 70 points.

Of the Auggies eight wrestlers in the meet, three have already been eliminated. Three wrestlers are still in the championship round: Orlando Ponce at 157, Brad Baus at 197 and Chad Johnson at 285. Will Kiefer at 145 and Tony Valek at 157 were both beaten in yesterday's quarterfinal round but both won their first consolation round matches. Wartburg, however, still has eight wrestlers going in the meet, four in the semifinals and all five of UWL's wrestlers are in the semifinals as well.

Wrestling continues all day at the La Crosse Center with the finals scheduled for 6 p.m. this evening.
