UW women head to Frozen Four, men play tonight after loss
The University of Wisconsin women's hockey team edged Mercyhurst with a pair of third period goals to advance to the Frozen Four in Duluth next weekend. The men's team has a Game 3 with Denver in their WCHA playoff series tonight after a 3-1 loss Saturday to the Pioneers.
MADISON - The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team has a berth in the Frozen Four for a second straight year after beating Mercyhurst Saturday 3-1.
Almost three thousand fans in the Kohl Center saw the Badgers take the NCAA quarterfinal game. Wisconsin plays Boston College next Friday at 5 p.m. in Duluth. After Carolyne Prevost put Wisconsin ahead, Mercyhurst tied it. Then, at the 11:18 mark of the third period, Hilary Knight scored the 29th game-winning goal of her collegiate career. Brianna Decker scored an insurance goal in the final three minutes. Alex Rigsby earned her 34th win of the season with 28 saves.

Three goals in the final period means there will be a third game in the WCHA playoff series between Denver and Wisconsin. The three goals gave Denver a 3-1 win Saturday at Magness Arena in Denver. The third game starts tonight at 8 p.m. with the winning team moving on to the Final Five. The Pioneers outshot Wisconsin 42-28. A goal from Justin Schultz had tied the score at 1-1, but Denver got the game-winner with seven minutes to go. Freshman goalie Joel Rumpel had held the Pioneers scoreless for five straight periods before the late rally. The puck drops tonight at 8 p.m. in the decisive third game.
