Augsburg places second at NCAA Wrestling meet

Augsburg College's wrestling team finished second in the team standings of the NCAA Division IIII meet, which wrapped up Saturday evening at the La Crosse Center.

LA CROSSE - Augsburg College's wrestling team finished second in the team standings of the NCAA Division IIII meet, which wrapped up Saturday evening at the La Crosse Center.

The Auggies had one national champion in Chad Johnson. The Ferryville, Wisconsin native who wrestled at DeSoto in high school, beat UW-Whitewater's Corey Anderson 6-1 in the finals at heavyweight. He becomes Augsburg's first national champ since Jared Massey in 2008 and the first individual national champ coached by Auggie head coach Mark Matzek of Ellsworth.

Defending national champion Wartburg was well out in front in first place with 141.5 points while the Auggies had 86.5. Finishing third was Coe College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa with 74 points and the host school, UW-La Crosse, scored 65 points. Ithaca college finished fifth.

Augsburg, the 2010 national champs, finished one place better than they did last season and for the 24th time finished in the top four.

Augsburg's Orlando Ponce finished second, Tony Valek and Will Kiefer both finished third and Brad Baus placed fourth.
