The Sweet-16 round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament begins tonight – and for fans in Wisconsin, it’s a double-header featuring the state’s top two teams.
The No. 4 Badgers will try to upset top-seeded Syracuse in the early game at 6:15 on C-B-S. Then around 9:15 or so, third-seeded Marquette takes on Number-seven Florida in the late game on TBS.
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has relied on his depth to overcome the loss of 7-foot center Fab Melo, who was suspended for the tournament due to academic issues. Kris Joseph and C.J. Fair have been solid front-court scorers for Syracuse. Joseph scores 14 points a game, and front-liner Rakeem Christmas had 11 rebounds last weekend in the Orangemen’s second-round win over Kansas State.
Syracuse is sure to key in on Wisconsin point guard Jordan Taylor. But the Badgers are also looking for strong showings from forward Ryan Evans and guard Josh Gasser – who helped Wisconsin beat Vanderbilt last Saturday despite a bout with the flu. Evans has scored in double figures in his last 14 games. The Badgers are 26-9 going into their second straight Sweet-16 appearance. Syracuse is 33-2. Tonight’s winner will play either Ohio State or Cincinnati in the Elite Eight round on Saturday. The game will be played at TD Garden in Boston, home of the Celtics.
