No 'pink slime' in Park school lunches

COTTAGE GROVE - South Washington County Schools’ student lunches do not contain a beef product known as “pink slime,” the district said.
The meat product, called lean finely textured beef, is made of beef trimmings treated with ammonia-based chemicals for decontamination.
The school district’s Nutrition Services Department said both of its beef vendors, King’s Command and AdvancePierre, do not use the product that in recent weeks has been pulled from grocery stores, restaurants and other food providers amid public complaint.
The U.S. Agriculture Department allows the beef product in school lunches and says it is safe.
District 833 said it uses higher nutritional standards than are set by the federal agency.
