Luke Hughes and Danny Valencia homered for Minnesota. Twins lefty Francisco Liriano allowed one earned run during his five-inning outing. The teams will meet again this afternoon.
The University of Minnesota men's hockey team will have one final practice at Mariucci Arena today before heading out to Tampa, Florida late this afternoon. The Gophers will play in this week's NCAA Frozen Four championship tournament in Tampa against Boston College on Thursday night in one national semifinal. Ferris State goes against Union in the other semifinal. The two Thursday winners will meet for the NCAA Division I men's hockey championship on Saturday in Tampa. The Gophers are making their first Frozen Four appearance since 2005.

Minnesota Wild head coach Mike Yeo gave his team the day off yesterday after originally scheduling a practice for the afternoon in Nashville. The Wild beat Chicago on Sunday and traveled to Nashville for a game tonight against the Predators. Minnesota has won three straight games, including back-to-back shootout wins. This evening's contest is set to faceoff at 7 p.m.
Both the MIAC and NSIC have named their baseball players of the week. Minnesota-Duluth infielder Anders Engberg of Burnsville is the NSIC Player of the Week, while St. Cloud State lefty Shawn Riesgraf of Chaska is the league's Pitcher of the Week. Macalester catcher Robert Williams of West Covina, California is the MIAC Player of the Week, while Augsburg freshman Ryan Mestnik of Prior Lake is the conference's Pitcher of the Week.
Minnesota hunters can now apply for a license to shoot bear this fall. The bear hunting season starts September first. The DNR says six-thousand licenses are available for use in 11 permit areas, mostly throughout northern Minnesota. Last year, about one out of every four applicants received a license after getting picked in a lottery.
Doron Lamb scored 22 points as Kentucky knocked off Kansas 67-59 in the NCAA men's basketball national championship game last night in New Orleans. Anthony Davis had six points, 16 rebounds and six blocks en route to being named Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. The national championship was the first for Kentucky since current University of Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith won the title game in 1998 as Wildcat head coach. Smith was in New Orleans and attended last night's game.
Former University of Virginia basketball star Ralph Sampson is among the inductees to the Basketball Hall of Fame this year. Sampson was a three-time collegiate national player of the year with the Cavaliers. He is the father of outgoing Golden Gopher basketball player Ralph Sampson III. Sampson II joins Reggie Miller, Don Nelson, Jamaal Wilkes, Katrina McClain, Hank Nichols and the first women's pro basketball team, the All American Red Heads in the Hall this year.
