Open burning still not allowed in Indianhead

Open burning is not allowed today in all but the far northern part of Wisconsin that’s controlled by the state DNR. The state suspended its burning permits on Easter Sunday due to tinder-dry conditions. And today, dry weather and winds gusting to 40-mile-an-hour have combined for a very high risk of wildfires throughout Wisconsin.

The fire danger is very high in all of the state except in Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron counties – and even there, the risk is high. And burning has been suspended in parts of that region due to last summer’s heavy winds and tree damage in the far northwest part of the state. In Madison, fire officials said today that almost all outdoor fires would be banned until conditions get wetter. Officials said folks could still grill their dinners as long as those fires are attended, and they’re at least 10-feet away from structures.

A hard freeze is expected tonight in western and central Wisconsin, where freeze warnings have been posted from 1-to-9 a-m tomorrow. Overnight lows in those regions are expected in the mid-20’s or so. Frost is predicted for most of Wisconsin tonight. The National Weather Service says a colder air mass will continue to blow northwest winds at least into Thursday – when our next chance of precipitation is in the forecast.
