An incident reported after the state wrestling tournament last month falls in the realm of Ellsworth School District administration authority.

The incident allegedly involved several local high school wrestlers and unconfirmed reports indicated they had alcohol while at the tourney.

School Superintendent Barry Cain declined to comment on the incident in question Monday. However, Cain said if an infraction occurred during a field trip, there are student disciplinary guidelines the district would follow. If there was an athletic code violation, an investigation takes place and the code spells out what punishment is prescribed for a first offense, second offense, third and the like.

The superintendent said penalties could include suspension from a sports season or even participation during a full academic year, depending on the severity of the violation.

This would be handled by administration, Cain said. The school board would act if an administration decision was appealed by a violator or the parent of a violator.

He didn’t confirm or deny whether there has been such an appeal in the case in question, keeping his comments in general. The agenda for this week’s regular board meeting didn’t show any items related to such a matter.
