Outdoor News-- Ecologists say they expect White-Nose Syndrome to show up in Wisconsin’s bats any time now. That disease is decimating the bat population in 18 states and four Canadian provinces.
Ecologists say they expect White-Nose Syndrome to show up in Wisconsin’s bats any time now. That disease is decimating the bat population in 18 states and four Canadian provinces.
One DNR expert says it’s not “if” the disease arrives in Wisconsin, but more likely “when.” Scientists say bats very beneficial, saving crops from insects, among other benefits.
The DNR puts a price tag of up to one and a half billion dollars a year in benefits to farmers. Wisconsin is said to be home to more than 300,000 brown bats, the most numerous of eight species of bats found in this state.
