Sunday State Sports Briefs: UW quarterback situation won't be settled until fall

Wisconsin Sports

MADISON - It will have to be after Danny O’Brien joins the program before the Wisconsin Badgers can clearly identify a number-one quarterback.

For now, it looks like 6-foot-5, 223-pound walk-on Joel Stave is getting some quality work in. Stave is a graduate of Whitnall High School. He worked with the number-one offense all day yesterday. Last year’s backup, Joe Brennan, worked with the number-two offense. The two had shared time this spring until yesterday. While the Badger coaches try to decide who will claim the job, they also have to be wondering who will grab the ball. There were six fumbles center-quarterback exchanges yesterday. UW's spring game is set for next Saturday with a the kick-off at 4 p.m. at Camp Randall Stadium.

Most experts are saying the Green Bay Packers will take a defensive player in the first round of this week’s 2012 NFL Draft. Most likely, it will be a pass rusher. The Pack gave up almost 4,800 yards through the air last season. More pressure on the passer would cover up some of the shortcomings in the defensive backfield. Other priorities when the picks start flying Thursday would be a cornerback, safety and maybe a running back, though the offense seems to be solid.

The NFL says suits by former Packers tight end Mark Chmura and others are meritless. Chmura has joined a growing group of former NFL players who are suing the league, claiming their cognitive abilities have declined due to concussions they suffered while playing. Hundreds of players are involved and their suits may be combined. There are said to be nearly 13 hundred plaintiffs listed in more than 60 law suits. Former Packers whose names are on the list include Santana Dotson, LeRoy Butler and Dorsey Levens.
