The University of Minnesota is poised to name a new athletic director later today. Virginia Commonwealth athletic director Norwood Teague was named as the finalist for the Golden Gopher position yesterday and it is expected he will be introduced as the school's new A-D at an afternoon news conference today. Teague has been V-C-U's athletic director since 2006 and watched his men's basketball program make an unlikely run to the N-C-Double-A Final Four in 2011. He has served within the athletic administration at North Carolina, Arizona State and Virginia. Teague, a North Carolina native, will take over for the Joel Maturi, who announced in February that he would step aside when his current contract runs out in June. Teague is expected to take over the full-time reigns of the "U" athletic department sometime this summer.

Tampa Bay's Desmond Jennings hit a two-run homer and Jeff Niemann didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning as the Rays defeated the Twins 6-2 yesterday in St. Petersburg. Jennings finished with three RBI and B.J. Upton knocked in a pair for Tampa Bay, which has won five of its last seven games. Niemann lasted five-and-a-third frames and was charged with two runs on three hits with two walks in the win. Francisco Liriano gave up five runs on three hits with four walks to suffer the loss for Minnesota. He is now 0-and-3 on the season. Ryan Doumit had a pinch-hit, two-run single in the sixth inning for the Twins, who fell to 5-and-11 on the season. Minnesota hosts Boston tonight.

Golden State's Charles Jenkins scored 24 points as the Warriors used a second-half surge to sink the Timberwolves 93-88 last night at the Target Center. Brandon Rush collected 19 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Golden State, which outscored Minnesota 54-33 after intermission. Klay Thompson netted 17 points the help the Warriors stop an eight-game slide. Thompson is the son of former Golden Gopher star Mychal Thompson. Nikola Pekovic finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds for Minnesota, which has dropped 12 of its last 13. Martell Webster dropped in 18 points in the loss. Minnesota's last game of the season is set for Thursday against Denver at the Target Center.

The Oakland Athletics claimed infielder Luke Hughes off waivers from the Minnesota Twins yesterday. Hughes played a career-best 96 games for Minnesota last season, batting .223 with seven home runs and 30 runs batted in. He earned a spot on the Opening Day roster this year, and accrued two hits and two RBI before being waived to make room for pitcher Jason Marquis. The 27-year-old Australian has a career .224 batting average with eight homers and 33 RBI over 102 games.
