Afternoon News Brief - James Neidermire, rural New Richmond, dies in farming accident

A 25 year old man has died in a farm accident in northwest Wisconsin. Polk County authorities said James Neidermire of rural New Richmond was plowing a field near a roadside ditch when his machine got stuck. And as he tried to free the unit, it rolled over and trapped him underneath. Neidermire was dead when sheriff’s officers arrived. The mishap occurred last evening in the Polk County town of Farmington.

An Appleton woman has won $10,000 dollars in a national cooking contest. 29 year old Rebekah Ranes made an “Autumn Acorn Squash Soup” that took first prize in the Eagle Brand Sweet Secret Recipe and Essay Contest. Ranes said she’s been entering online contests in the hopes of striking it big and she can really use the money, since she and her mother have been sharing a vehicle the past couple years. Ranes says she’ll use the winnings to buy a used car and move to Madison where she hopes to work at a restaurant while taking language-and-dance classes.

Metro Milwaukee accounted for the vast majority of the estimated 4500 private sector jobs that were lost in Wisconsin last month. State workforce development officials said today that the Milwaukee area lost around 4400 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis in March. Three other Wisconsin metros also lost jobs. Green Bay had an estimated 1500 job reductions, followed by Eau Claire with 800 and Neenah-Oshkosh with 500. Eight metros added jobs. Madison had the most with 1,000 new positions, followed by Racine with 800, La Crosse with 700, and Janesville and Wausau with 600. Appleton, Fond du Lac, and Fond du Lac had smaller increases. All 12 metros also had lower unadjusted jobless rates than the month before, as well as the previous year. Janesville had the highest rate at 9.2 percent, while Madison was the lowest at 5.3. All but five counties also saw their actual unemployment rates go down. Vilas, Forest, Ashland, and Menominee counties had increases. Iron County’s rate stayed the same.
