Minnesota Sports Briefs: Report says U's Tinsley dies of natural causes
Minnesota Sports-- The official word from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office is that Gary Tinsley died of natural causes. The 22-year old former U-of-M football player was found dead in his dorm room nearly three weeks ago.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The official word from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office is that Gary Tinsley died of natural causes. The 22-year old former U-of-M football player was found dead in his dorm room nearly three weeks ago.
Officials say Tinsley had an enlarged heart, and that foul play or drugs and alcohol had been ruled out. Tinsley had finished his eligibility last fall and was still enrolled in school to finish the semester and earn his degree. The University will give Tinsley's family the degree.

There are no former Golden Gopher football players projected to be selected in tonight's NFL Draft However, several players are expected to latch onto teams after the draft to get their shot to make teams as free agents. Among those figuring to get a chance at an NFL camp include Brandon Kirksey, Anthony Jacobs, Da'Jon McKnight, Kim Royston, Eric Lair, and Duane Bennett.

St. Paul native Michael Floyd will likely hear his name called somewhat early in tonight's NFL Draft. The record-setting wide receiver from Notre Dame is expected to be a first round draft choice and some say as high as a Top Ten pick. Floyd played high school football at Cretin-Derham Hall.

Peyton Manning's move to Denver is popular with NFL fans. According to "USA Today," the Broncos quarterback is leading early sales of Nike NFL jerseys since pre-orders began on NFLShop.com earlier this month. The apparel company recently took over the licensing rights from rival Reebok. New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow, whom Manning replaced in Denver, is number-two. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning ranks third, followed by Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

The Minnesota Timberwolves wrap up the regular season against the Nuggets at the Target Center this evening. Wolves star Kevin Love has been cleared to play, but the team is holding him out for precautionary reasons. Love suffered a concussion against Denver back on April 11th. Tonight's season-finale is at 7 p.m. Tonight is Fan Appreciation Night and upper level tickets are only five-dollars.

Denver's Ty Lawson posted 25 points to pace the Nuggets in a 106-101 win over the Thunder last night in Oklahoma. Denver will visit Minnesota to close out the regular season tonight.

The St. Paul Saints have a new pitching coach. Former big leaguer Kerry Ligtenberg takes over the job from outgoing Jason Verdugo. Verdugo recently accepted the athletic director's job at Hamline. Ligtenberg is a former Golden Gopher pitcher, who spent time with the Braves, Orioles, Blue Jays, and Diamondbacks. He is a Park High School graduate. The Saints open the season on May 6th at Fargo-Moorhead.

The University of Minnesota baseball team used a seven-run eighth inning to rally past North Dakota State 11-7 in a college baseball game at the Metrodome yesterday. J.T. Canakes of Eden Prairie drove home two runs for the Golden Gophers, while Kirk Kenneally of Andover plated two for NDSU. The Gophers are 24-19 and the Bison are 29-10. Minnesota hosts Iowa this weekend.

University of Minnesota men's track and field star Quentin Mege is this week's Big Ten Conference Field Athlete of the Week. Mege landed a career best mark of 215-feet in the hammer throw event last weekend at a meet in Iowa. Mege is a junior from The Chelles, France.
