GREEN BAY - A plea deal is in the works for a former suburban Green Bay firefighter accused of busting into a house that he thought an acquaintance had owned.

26-year old Joseph Kobielak waived a preliminary hearing today in Brown County Circuit Court on a felony count of criminal damage. He’s also charged with misdemeanor trespassing. And he has until June fourth to decide whether to accept a prosecutor’s recommendation for a year and a half of probation in exchange for a plea that would convict him. Kobielak is accused of breaking doors and other items at a home on April first. Police said his blood alcohol level was .24 at the time. He was off duty from the Howard Fire Department when the incident occurred. He has since resigned.

A Catholic elementary school in Platteville that was saved by its supporters two years ago will not be as fortunate this year. Madison Bishop Robert Morlino said Saint Mary’s School in Platteville will close for good at the end of the current school year. Enrollment dropped from 116 students in the previous school year to 84 now. The parish finance and pastoral councils recommended a shutdown earlier this month. That was after the church said last month it would need $160,000 dollars to keep going this fall.
